High-tech body posture analysis for injury prevention

The best body posture analysis to prevent sports injury is one that utilises a high-tech gait analysis system with a 3D foot pressure scan because we can get dozens of analytical data points about the interaction (forces and pressure loads) between our feet and the ground.

Clinical Body Assessment

The first step of a body posture analysis is to collect data for a clinical body assessment of the patient.

The clinical body assessment consists of collecting data about anthropometric measurements of the patient, such as:

  1. Calf Muscles circumference.
  2. Quad muscles circumference.
  3. Hip Circumference.
  4. Leg length discrepancy.

These data collected from the patients will allow us to understand if there are muscles imbalances and/or postural imbalances.

Data about the medical history of the patient will be collected both to understand the reason for the body posture analysis and the possible underlying causes of recurrent or acute musculoskeletal issues.

Data about the amount of weekly exercise is being collected as well to understand the amount of training and load the patient’s body is undertaking.

the data below are an example of the data that are collected from the patient during our high-tech body posture assessment:

  1. 37 Years old.
  2. Pure hip flexibility.
  3. Shin splints in the past.
  4. Left Foot pain.
  5. Gym (twice a week).
  6. Play football (once a month).
  7. Cricket in the past (4 years ago).
  8. Neck and Shoulder stiffness.
  9. Hip Flexors stiffness.
  10. Left Foot pain.

Images of the body in different positions will be analysed to check further body posture inbalances and muscles imbalances such as:

  1. Shoulders discrepancy.
  2. Shoulders defects (winged or rounded shoulders)
  3. Tilted Head.
  4. Kyphosys.
  5. Scoliosis.
  6. Flat Spine.

Stance Analysis with 3D foot pressures scan

The stance analysis performed in our sports injury clinic in London utilises a high-tech 3D foot pressure scan, which will provide us with dozens of analytical data points about the interaction of the patient’s body with the ground.

The interaction of the body with the ground is expressed by the forces of the ground acting on the soles of the feet. The high-tech foot pressure scan will express the forces in N/cm2, elaborating a 3D foot pressure map with different colours distinguishing lower from higher pressures.

Alarming (excessive) peaks of force are the red and yellow spots in the 3D foot pressure map, as evidenced in the image below.

Flat Feet 3D Foot Scan

more specifically, the image above shows the data collected from our high-tech body posture analysis of a patient who is affected by flat feet. In this case, most of the forces are concentrated on the midfoot when they should be distributed on the forefoot and heel.

The image below shows the same 3D foot pressure map but in the form of numerical data instead of a 3D image.

The numerical data represent the forces expressed in Newton (N) per cm2 acting in different points of the sole of the patient’s foot.

In this patient, the highest peak of forces is acting on the right midfoot with a force of 10N per cm2.

Instead, in the image below, the data about another patient with a less important flat foot shows a milder overload of the midfoot and higher overload of the heels.

The image below, like the second one, shows the same 3D foot pressure map but in the form of numerical data instead of a 3D image. In this patient, the highest peak of forces is acting on both heels and less on the midfoot, with a max force of 14N per cm2.

How to use the data from high-tech body posture analysis for injury prevention?

In our postural lab in London, we have been collecting thousands of analytical data about body posture issues that were the underlying causes of recurrent sports injury.

As the feet are pillars of our body, it is fundamental to check all the data coming from an accurate 3D foot pressure scan assessment.

In fact, the forces acting on our feet are transmitted up to our body, passing from the shin, knee, hip, shoulders, and neck. So excessive peaks of forces or imbalances acting on our feet can cause issues in the entire body.

Another very important part of the body posture is our spine.

If there are spinal defects such as scoliosis, kyphosis, or flat spine, they can cause issues in other parts of our body, such as shoulder pain, lower back pain or hip and knee pain.

Data from a high-tech body posture analysis can help us to determine the underlying causes on many injuries or recurrent inflammation process such as:

  1. Plantar Fasciitis.
  2. Ankle sprain.
  3. Achilles Inflammation.
  4. Shin Splint.
  5. Stress Fractures.
  6. Knee Pain.
  7. Hip Pain.
  8. Back Pain.
  9. Shoulders and Back Pain.
  10. Migraine and Headache.

Causes of recurrent plantar fasciitis identified with a body posture analysis

Now I am going to show you some data from a body posture analysis which helped us to identify the underlying causes of a recurrent Plantar Fasciitis and foot pain in a runner.

Thanks to our high-tech 3D foot pressure scan we have identified the excessive forces acting on the right midfoot of a runner that were causing recurrent foot and ankle pain.

The image below shows a 3D foot pressure map where it is clear an overload on both midfoot, but more on the right foot.

Recurrent plantar fasciitis from flat foot with excessive pressure acting on both midfoot (more right foot)

These data about peaks of forces acting on the midfoot during stance analysis (standing position), have been found during our high-tech running analysis.

So this condition of midfoot overload, both during standing and running, is the main cause of recurrent foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and occasionally Achilles inflammation.

The treatment and exercise plan to reduce the chances of getting recurrent plantar fasciitis, Achilles inflammation, and foot pain for this runner was based on the following rehabilitation protocol:

  1. High Power Laser Therapy to reduce inflammation and pain.
  2. Shockwave Therapy to reduce adhesions, calcifications, and speed up the healing process..
  3. Physiotherapy exercises to reduce flat feet.
  4. Sports Massage to reduce muscle tension caused by excessive forces acting on the foot and calf.
