The best sports massage for hip and groin pain

Depending on the causes of hip and groin pain, sports massage can be one of the best therapies to treat hip and groin pain or injury.

For example, if the main cause of hip and groin pain is overtraining or overload of the hip joint, sports massage or deep tissue massage, is preferred to a physiotherapy exercise session.

Physiotherapy is preferred for hip and groin pain when the main cause is muscle weakness or muscle imbalances between the two legs or sides of the hip. Even in this case, as muscle weakness causes easy muscle stiffness in the weaker leg, sports massage therapy should be integrated with physio exercise sessions.

Which muscles should sports massage target to cure hip and groin pain?

Despite there could be a specific trigger point area of symptoms to focus on, sports massage should be performed on all the main three areas of the hip:

  1. Front of the hip.
  2. Side of the hip.
  3. Back of the hip.

The main muscles to treat on the front of the hip areas are:

  1. Rectus Femoris Muscle.
  2. Ileopsoas Muscle.
  3. Sartorius Muscle.
  4. Gracilis Muscles.
  5. Pectineus Muscles.
  6. Adductor Muscles.

The main muscles to treat on the outer of the hip areas are:
  1. Gluteus Maximus Muscle.
  2. Gluteus Medius Muscle.
  3. Gluteus Minimus Muscle.
  4. Piriformis Muscle.
  5. Obturator Internus Muscle.
  6. Quadratus Femoris Muscle.
  7. Gemellus superior and inferior Muscles.

The main muscles to treat on the upper back of the hip areas are:

  1. Latissimus Dorsi Muscle.
  2. Longissimus Thoracis Muscle.
  3. Iliocostalis Lumborum Muscles.
  4. Multifidus Lumborum Muscle.
  5. Quadratus Lumborum Muscle.
  6. Gluteus Maximus Muscle.

The main muscles to treat on the lower back of the hip areas are:

  1. Gluteus Maximus Muscle.
  2. Biceps Femoris Muscle.
  3. Semitendinosus Muscle.
  4. Semimembranosus Muscle.

Sports massage, by easing the tension on these muscles, can reduce muscle pain and muscle spasms, and eventually improve the hip’s range of motion.
When treating hip and groin pain, the sports therapist should always consider the synergy of a group of muscles involved in the hip biomechanics and never target only a single muscle, only because the pain is localized on the area of a specific muscle.

Shockwaves Therapy for Groin Pain

Sports Massage for hip and groin injury or pain prevention.

Sports massage can play an important role in reducing the chances of getting a groin and hip injury or pain.

The pain is caused by the inflammation of the hip joint and/or muscles.

Apart from the case of a traumatic event or structural issues that involve the hip, hip inflammation is caused by a long process of muscle tension built up with time. If we tackle the building up of muscle tension during its process, we will be able to avoid reaching the peak amount that would trigger the inflammation process.

So sports massage should be performed before the pain, as a preventative treatment to avoid the build-up of excessive muscle tension.

In our sports injury clinic in London, we have designed a specific treatment for hip and groin pain. It is a treatment that combines instruments-assisted sports massage and postural hip and groin massage

We advise all our patients with hip and groin pain, to follow our stretching exercises guide as a form of self-therapy.
