The best shockwave therapy to treat Achilles calcifications

What does Achilles Calcification mean?

Achilles calcification represents a condition where there is a buildup of calcium deposits alongside the Achilles tendon and surrounding tissues.

Generally, it happens after a partial or complete tendon rupture, and we have scar tissue formation.

Chronic inflammation can increase and promote tendon calcification, which can affect Achilles biomechanics and function, with chronic pain and inability to perform sports or exercise properly.

How Shockwave Therapy can treat Achilles Calcification?

Shockwave therapy utilises high-energy acoustic waves in superficial and deep tissues, which can break down calcium deposits alongside the Achilles and surrounding tissues.

At our sports injury clinic in London, we utilise the most powerful and advanced shockwave therapy machine on the European market to deliver the best Achilles calcification treatment.

Shockwave therapy helps not only to break down calcification but to speed up the healing process, such as:

  1. Promoting neo-angiogenesis.
  2. Increasing blood flow.
  3. Anti-inflammatory action.
  4. Analgesic Action.
  5. Promoting tissue remodelling.

The physiotherapy protocol for Achilles Calcification at Mr Salus Sporting Lab

At Mr Salus Sporting Lab in London, we have a holistic approach to treating Achilles Calcification by designing a specific Physiotherapy protocol which includes different treatments such as:

  1. Hands-on Physiotherapy.
  2. IASTM Treatment.
  3. Shockwave Therapy.
  4. Sports Massage.

Our hands-on physiotherapy includes a specific physio technique, called Dyacutaneous Fibrolisis, which is an Instrument Assisted physio technique performed with stainless steel tools with a hook shape. An expert physiotherapist will perform this treatment to break down manually the calcifications and reduce tissue adhesion.

IASTM Treatment is a Instruments Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilazation which use always stainless steel tools with different blade shapes. With this treatment, the expert sports therapist can treat both tendons and muscles to reduce muscle stiffness, tendon rigidity, and improve ankle mobility.

Shockwave Therapy helps to break down calcification and adhesions, and promotes the soft tissue healing process.

Sports Massage can help to improve the general ankle and muscle biomechanics by improving muscles and tendon flexibility, reducing ankle rigidity, and reducing muscle fatigue.

How to apply shockwave therapy for Achilles Calcification

The classic shockwave protocol for Achilles Calcification is around 3000 hits per session, with a header application at 90 degree at the back of the Achilles.

At Mr Salus Sporting Lab, we have designed our own protocol, which is showing better and faster results by increasing the amount of hits per session, and header areas and modality of application, such as:

  1. 3 Sessions of 2000 hits for each application.
  2. First Application with a header at 90 degree on the back of the Achilles.
  3. Second Application with a header at 90 degree on the side of the Achilles.
  4. Third Application with a header at 45 degree on the side of the Achilles pointing outwards.

The image below gives you a visual description of our shockwave application methodology for Achilles Calcification.

Our application methodology has the aim of 3D application of the shockwaves all around the buildup of calcific tissue, to catch and break it down from different angles and positions.
