The best gait analysis for children

The best gait analysis for children is one that utilises two high-tech gait analysis systems combined, such as:

  1. Treadmill with force sensors underneath the mat.
  2. HD Video camera system.

The treadmill with force sensors underneath the mat will provide us with dozens of analytical data about the interaction between children’s feet and the ground.

This high-tech gait system will produce a 3D foot pressure map, which will tell us if there are dangerous peaks of forces acting on different parts of the foot, such as the forefoot, midfoot or heel.

The HD video system, on the other hand, will provide us with more general information about the limbs’ movement and coordination.

It will help our expert postural physiotherapist to understand if there are body posture imbalances as well, such as:

  1. Scoliosis.
  2. Kyphosis.
  3. Shoulders Discrepancy.
  4. Hip Discrepancy.
  5. Valgus Knee.
  6. Valgus Ankle.

The most important gait parameters for children

The most important gait parameters to analyse for children are:

  1. Foot Rotation.
  2. Step Length.
  3. Stance Phase.
  4. Swing Phase.
  5. Stride Length.
  6. Cadence (steps/minute).
  7. Gait Line Length.
  8. Ant/Post Variability (mm).
  9. Lateral Symmetry.
  10. Lateral Variability.
  11. Butterfly Graph (Gait Lines).

How to improve gait parameters in children

In our gait lab in London, our physiotherapists have been gathering a lot of analytical data about children’s gait issues, and the most common are:

  1. Excessive External Foot Rotation.
  2. Excessive Internal Foot Rotation.
  3. Foot Pronation after foot strike.
  4. Foot Supination.
  5. Poor Lateral Symmetry (Poor Walking Balance).

The image below shows a real time video feedback of a gait analysis for children with an excessive internal right and left foot rotation.

Children gait analysis with excessive internal foot rotation

Thanks to our high-tech gait analysis system for children, we have developed a specific neuromuscular walking training for children, where they will have a real-time video feedback which will help them to train their brain to correct their neuromuscular activation.

The video below shows the video feedback which will be displayed in front of the children to correct in real time their gait parameters.

Gait Analysis to reduce the risk of injury in young athletes

Gait analysis can be a key diagnostic instrument to discover the underlying causes of recurrent injury in young athletes.

Gait dysfunctions can be the cause of sports injury in young athletes, such as:

  1. Knee Tendinopathy.
  2. Chronic lower back pain.
  3. Achilles Tendinopathy.
  4. Osgood-Schlatter Disease.
  5. Pubic inflammation (groin pain).
  6. Hip inflammation.
  7. Sever’s Disease (heel pain).
  8. Plantar Fasciitis.
  9. Stress Fractures.
